ACTION ALERT: Austin Public Safety is at Risk -- Your help is Needed TODAY
We will ALWAYS fight to improve public safety in Austin.
Good Tuesday morning --
We have a CRITICAL action item this morning.
We need your help to ensure Austin City Council is doing their job to improve our community's safety and security.
Topline: The Austin City Council meets LATER THIS WEEK to decide if Austin police can continue to use common sense Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras.
This vital technology protects our privacy and our community by only alerting police when a vehicle associated with a crime is spotted. With Austin’s continuing shortage of police officers, ALPR cameras allow Austin officers to more effectively use their time, being out in the field instead of behind a desk.
An independent report by the City Auditor of the ALPR program found it “resulted in 165 arrests, approximately 134 prosecutions, and 1 missing/endangered person recovered.” Importantly, the audit showed that using ALPR “resulted in 0 incorrect or unjustified stops.”
We’re asking for your help to tell Austin City Council members that they should vote to extend use of ALPRs.
TAKE ACTION: Click here to send a letter to the Austin City Council demanding that they authorize the use of ALPR cameras.
Further Background:
Between March 2024 and March 2025, the Austin Police Department (APD) participated in a trial period for a new Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR) program. This was a huge success helping reduce crime in our city.
So far, the audit has touted the incredible benefits of ALPR use in the city. The results speak for themselves:
The ALPR program facilitated 165 arrests, led to approximately 134 prosecutions, and successfully recovered one missing/endangered person.
Utilizing four hotlists, the program identified 13,122 matches without any incorrect or unjustified stops.
Each stop was thoroughly reviewed against resolution requirements, confirming zero incidents of error or misuse.
Austin has the strongest privacy protections in the nation, with more audits, stronger oversight, and shorter data retention period than any other city in the country.
The Austin City Council needs to hear directly from Austin residents that they want our police to have the tools needed to solve crimes. Your voice can make a significant difference in ensuring that Austin police and first responders remain equipped with essential tools to combat crime effectively.
Please speak up to make our city safer and more prosperous!

Thank you!
